A
Active(process) A process that requires energy from the cell to move substances, usually against their concentration gradient.
Active transportThe movement of substances across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, using energy (ATP).
C
Concentration gradientThe difference in concentration of a substance between two regions.
D
DiffusionThe net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, without using energy.
F
FlaccidA plant cell that has lost water, causing it to become soft and limp.
N
Net movementThe overall movement of particles when more move in one direction than the other.
O
P
Partially permeable(membrane): A barrier that allows some particles, usually small ones like water, to pass through but blocks larger particles.
Passive(process): A process that does not require energy from the cell, such as diffusion or osmosis.
PlasmolysedA plant cell in which the cell membrane has pulled away from the cell wall because too much water has left the cell.
