Introduction

Every cell in your body needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to survive. At the same time, cells produce waste products such as carbon dioxide that must be removed. The circulatory system is responsible for transporting these materials throughout the body.

The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and a network of blood vessels. Together, these components deliver oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other essential substances to body cells while carrying away carbon dioxide and other wastes. The circulatory system works closely with many other organ systems, particularly the respiratory system, to keep the body functioning normally.

What Is the Circulatory System?

The circulatory system (also called the cardiovascular system) is the organ system that transports substances throughout the body.

Its main functions are to:

  • Deliver oxygen.
  • Transport nutrients.
  • Carry hormones.
  • Remove carbon dioxide.
  • Remove other waste products.
  • Help regulate body temperature.
  • Support the immune system.

The circulatory system reaches every part of the body through an extensive network of blood vessels.

Figure 1. The circulatory system transports blood throughout the body using the heart and blood vessels.

Major Components of the Circulatory System

The circulatory system has three main components:

  • Heart
  • Blood
  • Blood vessels

Each component performs a specialised role.

The Heart

The heart is a strong muscular organ about the size of a clenched fist.

It acts as a pump, continuously circulating blood around the body.

The heart has four chambers:

  • Right atrium
  • Right ventricle
  • Left atrium
  • Left ventricle

The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps blood to the entire body.

A healthy adult heart beats about 60–100 times per minute at rest.

Blood

Blood is a specialised connective tissue that transports substances throughout the body.

It is made of four main components.

Component Function
Plasma Transports water, nutrients, hormones, and waste products
Red blood cells Carry oxygen using haemoglobin
White blood cells.   Fight infections
Platelets Help blood clot and prevent blood loss

Each component contributes to maintaining health and homeostasis.

Blood Vessels

Blood travels through three main types of blood vessels:

  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Capillaries

Each type has a different structure and function.

Arteries

Arteries carry blood away from the heart.

Features:

  • Thick, muscular walls.
  • Elastic tissue.
  • Small internal opening (lumen).
  • High blood pressure.

Most arteries carry oxygen-rich blood.

The main exception is the pulmonary artery, which carries oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs.

Veins

Veins carry blood toward the heart.

Features:

  • Thinner walls than arteries.
  • Larger lumen.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Valves that prevent blood from flowing backward.

Most veins carry oxygen-poor blood.

The main exception is the pulmonary vein, which carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart.

Capillaries

Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels.

Their walls are only one cell thick.

This thin wall allows substances to move between the blood and body tissues.

In capillaries:

  • Oxygen leaves the blood.
  • Carbon dioxide enters the blood.
  • Nutrients move into cells.
  • Waste products move into the bloodstream.

Capillaries are the main sites of exchange.

Figure 4. Blood carries many substances needed for normal body function.

Working with the Respiratory System

The circulatory and respiratory systems work together continuously.

In the Lungs

  • Oxygen diffuses into the blood.
  • Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood.

In Body Tissues

  • Oxygen leaves the blood and enters cells.
  • Carbon dioxide enters the blood.

The heart then pumps this blood back to the lungs, where the cycle repeats.

Without this cooperation, body cells would not receive oxygen or remove carbon dioxide efficiently.

Why the Circulatory System Is Important

The circulatory system:

  • Supplies oxygen and nutrients.
  • Removes wastes.
  • Helps regulate body temperature.
  • Supports immune function.
  • Maintains homeostasis.

It connects every organ system in the body.

Worked Example

Question

Complete the table.

Blood Vessel.  Function
Artery ?
Vein ?
Capillary ?

Solution

Blood Vessel.   Function
Artery Carries blood away from the heart
Vein Carries blood toward the heart
Capillary Allows exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes between blood and tissues

Real-World Connection

During exercise, your muscles need more oxygen and nutrients to produce energy. Your heart beats faster and pumps more blood through the arteries to your muscles. At the same time, your breathing rate increases so the lungs can supply more oxygen. The circulatory and respiratory systems work together to meet the increased demands of physical activity and remove the extra carbon dioxide produced by working muscles.

Did You Know?

If all the blood vessels in an adult's body were placed end to end, they would stretch for about 100,000 kilometres—more than twice the circumference of the Earth. Most of this incredible network consists of tiny capillaries, where the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products takes place.
