
Polynomial and Rational Functions is a comprehensive mathematics course that explores two of the most important families of functions used throughout algebra, calculus, science, engineering, and economics. Students begin by investigating the structure and behaviour of polynomial functions, learning how their degree, leading coefficient, zeros, and multiplicities influence the shape of their graphs. They develop fluency in performing algebraic operations with polynomials, including addition, multiplication, factoring, and division, before applying these skills to solve increasingly complex polynomial equations.
The course then introduces rational functions, focusing on domain restrictions, asymptotic behaviour, graphing techniques, and algebraic manipulation of rational expressions and equations. Throughout the course, students learn to analyse function behaviour, interpret graphs, apply mathematical models to real-world situations, and select appropriate techniques to solve a wide variety of problems. Emphasis is placed on developing strong algebraic reasoning, graphical interpretation, and problem-solving skills that form an essential foundation for advanced studies in mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, computer science, and many other STEM disciplines.
