Food does far more than satisfy hunger—it provides the building materials, energy, and nutrients that allow living organisms to grow, repair themselves, and carry out life's essential processes. In this course, students will explore the fascinating relationship between biology, nutrition, and health by investigating the molecules that make up living organisms and the ways in which the body obtains and uses them.
The course begins with Biomolecules – The Building Blocks of Life, where students examine the major classes of biological molecules, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Students then explore Enzymes and Biological Reactions, discovering how enzymes act as biological catalysts and control the chemical reactions that sustain life.
Next, students investigate Human Nutrition, learning about nutrients, balanced diets, food labels, energy requirements, and the importance of healthy eating habits. In Digestion and Absorption, students trace the journey of food through the digestive system and examine how nutrients are broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. Finally, the course concludes with Food Science and Metabolism, where students perform food tests, investigate cellular respiration, explore energy release from food, and examine the role of nutrition in health and disease.
Throughout the course, students will connect biological concepts to everyday life by analyzing diets, interpreting food labels, investigating digestive health, and exploring how lifestyle choices influence well-being. Practical activities and laboratory investigations will help students develop scientific skills while deepening their understanding of the relationship between food, energy, and human health.
